iDoor, the iPhone controlled hydraulic dorm room door created By an MIT student. I love how he says "Its 2009 after all, about time we stopped carrying around shaped bits of metal to open up locked doors"

iPhone App Review: Galcon 10/10

Posted by Chris

So I've noticed iPhone reviewers generally only review games they like. Not surprising as there are so many crappy apps out there so to review them all would take forever and probably be really boring. Next time I'll review some less then amazing games and pack them all into one post just to be fair.

So on to Galcon. I have been playing this game for a while and still find it fast,  fun, and challenging. It is a Real time strategy game set of interplanetary warfare. It is similar to the game played at the end of "Ender's Game" if you've ever read that.  Think space risk but not turn based. It is very simple and  a lot o fun.

You start off controlling one planet which gives you so many resources (guys) a second. You  send your space ships out and have them take over other planets which will give you more guys. You want to take over as many planets as you can while trying to stop your opponent from doing the same and eventually wiping them out.  There are a few different versions of the game which ahve different rules but I rarely play them the Classic is challenging enough for me.

Whenever anyone asks me what Games they should try on there iPhone this is the first one I recommend.

iPhone App Review: UniWar 8/10

A turn based strategy game about space marines and alien bugs. It is kind of like a mix between Starcraft and chess.  I haven't played the multiplayer yet or the online games but the single player campaign is a lot of fun.I haven't gotten bored of it after playing it for over a week and for that its worth my $3. the only down side I have is it can feel somewhat slow.  You can play through the tutorial with the free version and get a great feel for the game.

iPhone Scrabble: Review 9/10

I got the iPhone Scrabble game a few months ago and at the time it was going for $10. Since then there have been a few changes. Including Facebook integration, a few price drops, and stability improvements.  Luckily none have changed the original game play which works great.

Single player is a fun time killer and I often play it while on the train or while running scans at work. It has a few cheater functions like the "best word" button which will scan the board and give you the most points for your tiles. Also it won't let you put down a word if its not in the dictionary. Which is fun because you can keep trying combination of letters till it accepts it as some form of a word.

Multiplayer is much more interesting. They have integrated the iPhone app with the Scrabble Facebook application. This lets you play with anyone who has a Facebook account. Adding in the social aspect of  scrabble has made it much more fun. Even though games can sometimes take days or weeks to complete.

Multiplayer also has some cheater functions. Just like single player it won't let you put down words which aren't in the dictionary. However it does have a dictionary built in so you can check words before you put them down. It also has a "Scrabble Teacher" button which tells you where you could have got the most points but only  after you already put down you letters.

The only complaints I have is that It sometimes crashes. Not very often for me but I have heard on some iPhones it crashes a lot. I've fixed crashing with other apps by reinstalling them so it may not be Scrabble's fault.

Also there is a really annoying animation at the start up of the game which plays sound even when your phone is on vibrate. You can turn this off by turning down the volume while the animation is playing.
